Hood grew up in Marshall and was a high school standout at Marshall High School before beginning his college player career at Hill College in Hillsboro, Texas. Following two seasons with the Rebels Hood transferred to the University of Texas at Tyler, where he had two monster seasons with the Patriots to close out his collegiate playing career.

After receiving a bachelor's degree in Health and Kinesiology from UT Tyler in May of 2010, Hood returned to Hill College to serve as assistant coach. In two years on staff at Hill, Hood recruited three players who were major league draftees and helped coach a program that produced five major league draft picks. Hood worked with hitters and defense as well as recruiting, and he also was involved with strength and conditioning in the program.
Coach Hood has also served as an assistant coach with the Cooperstown Hawkeyes of the New York Collegiate Baseball League in Cooperstown, NY, as well as coaching the Dallas Patriots 18U select squad.
