MC's Second Half Hot Hand Takes Momentum Away from ETBU

CLINTON, Miss. – An 8-0 run with just under 10 minutes to play in the game by Mississippi College (6-9/4-8 ASC) shifted the momentum from East Texas Baptist University as the Choctaws finished to take the game, 77-70. Mississippi College shot 77 percent in the second half after being held to just 46 percent in the first half. ETBU is now 5-10 and 3-9 in the American Southwest Conference.
Producing a career-high of 16 points, Tyler Day led ETBU in scoring. He shot 60 percent from the floor (6-of-10) and made four three-pointers on seven attempts. Justin Felicia added 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting with two three-pointers. Jamil Samuel led with 11 rebounds. Emmanuel Ezejiofo led all scorers from Mississippi College with 27 points.
With 9:40 to go in the game, Erby Thompson swooshed in a three-pointer to give ETBU a four-point lead, 59-55. In the next 1:35, Mississippi College went on an 8-0 run to take a four-point lead, 63-59, and a nine-point lead, 69-60, with 4:43 remaining. ETBU cut the lead back to three, 73-70, with 1:04 left but couldn’t get any closer. Mississippi College shot 76 percent in the second half and made 80 percent of their three-pointers shifting the momentum of the game.
ETBU had a five-point lead, 45-40, at the 14:51 mark before Mississippi College tied the game at 47 with 13:24 left. ETBU outscored Mississippi College, 7-3, in the next two and half minutes for the four-point lead, 54-50. By the 10:21 mark, ETBU had a five-point lead on a Thompson layup. That tied their largest lead of the second half before Mississippi College’s run.
In the first 10 minutes of the game, there were 11 lead changes before ETBU 6-0 run for a five-point lead. Down 15-14, ETBU scored the next six points on two straight three-pointers from Day and Dylan Augustine making it 20-15 at the 10:39 mark. Mississippi College brought the lead down to one, 20-19, with 8:41 remaining and then neither team hit a shot until the 4:50 mark when Day backed in a layup.
Mississippi College tied the game at 23 with 3:09 left in the half but ETBU ended the half on a 10-4 run for their largest lead of the game, 33-27, at the half.
ETBU led Mississippi College in most categories shooting 42 percent from the floor, 43 percent from the arc, and 42 percent from the line. Mississippi College finished shooting 61 percent overall, 33 percent from the three-point line, and 64 percent from the foul line. ETBU won the rebounding game, 31-30, and had one less turnover with 13.
ETBU will next face Louisiana College on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in Pineville, La.
