MARSHALL, Texas – After starting off the season on the with tough matches in West Texas, the East Texas Baptist University men’s tennis team will travel to Richardson, Texas, looking to take on the University of Texas Dallas. Texas Dallas in the ASC West Division so it is a friendly crossover match.
Two weeks ago, ETBU fell to both Hardin-Simmons and McMurry in Abilene. Against HSU, ETBU lost 6-3, including all three doubles matches. ETBU did win three matches with Andrew Deutsch (No. 4 singles, 6-4, 1-6, 1-0 (10-7)), Joseph Salinas (No. 5 singles, 6-2, 7-5) and Ty Tarver (No. 6 singles, 6-2, 7-5). In the second match of the day, ETBU fell to McMurry, 5-4. Cody Highsmith and John Herr won the No. 2 doubles match in a tiebreaker 9-8 while Salinas (No. 3 singles) won 7-5, 2-6, 12-10. Tarver won the No. 5 singles match 6-2, 6-3 while Herr also won the No. 6 singles match 6-2, 6-3.
For his performance, Salinas was named the ASC East Tennis Player of the Week marking his and ETBU’s first award of the season.
ETBU now turns their attention to the defending ASC Champion Texas Dallas. Last season, ETBU played the Comets twice, losing both times. In their first match, ETBU lost 9-0 on February 19, 2016. In the ASC Conference Tournament, ETBU fell in the semifinals by the score of 5-2.
Head coach Jeff Bramlett understands the task that ETBU faces for this week. “It’s going to be a hard match,” said Bramlett. “The men’s team won the ASC West Division last season. We just thought the competition was tough last weekend. It’s getting ready to go up another notch this weekend. We’re going to have our hands full.”
The match begins at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday.
