"Strike Out Cancer" Series Brings in Over $5,000
MARSHALL, Texas – Cancer has affected the East Texas Baptist University softball team in a lot of different ways including family members as three softball player’s parents are currently battling cancer. In their third year of the “Strike Out Cancer” games, ETBU once again raised over $5,000 to help family members associated with ETBU.
“We have been doing this event for three years now and a lot of families have been affected by the funds that have been raised,” says head coach Janae Shirley. “All the money raised goes into our foundation we started to help any family members associated with ETBU giving out $500 checks. We just want to help out families that are battling cancer and they can use the money in any way they want.”
The “Strike Out Cancer” games were started three years ago and has raised over $20,000 in that time. Shirley, whose sister has battled leukemia, started the campaign and foundation for it three years ago to help ETBU families that dealt with cancer. At the time, a member of the team had been battling leukemia and Shirley’s mother had had cancer twice.
“This year this series was a little more emotional for our players as three members of our team have parents going through cancer treatments right now,” says Shirley.
ETBU raises money for the series through selling t-shirts for $15, holding a silent, auction, and takes donations. The money then goes to the softball foundation that is run by a committee of ETBU faculty and staff members that have been affected by cancer who then help to disperse the money to the families that apply.
In its third year, the ETBU softball team has raised more than $20,000 in that time to help families with cancer.
