ETBU Advances to NCAA Regional Championship

TYLER, Texas – It was the seventh time in 2014 that #6 East Texas Baptist University faced the #3 University of Texas-Tyler with this being the biggest meeting as the Tigers pulled out the NCAA Tyler Regional victory, 4-1. It was the second win in the lasts three games against UT-Tyler and now ETBU advances to the regional championship game vs. Texas Lutheran on Sunday.
“Our girls really stepped up on the sixth and seventh inning and showed leadership and they did a phenomenal job and I am proud of them,” says head coach Janae Shirley. “We knew going into this game it was going to be a tough game just from our history with the series and we knew were we going to have to play well and play our ball and our girls did a good job of focusing on that.”
Shelby Parker pitched for the second game in a row earning her 21st win of the year gaining back-to-back victories with the 3-0 win over Texas Lutheran. She recorded one strikeout and gave up seven hits and one earned run.
ETBU had six players with one hit in Jayme Perez, Alyssa Romero, Jessica Bowden, Lacey Lindsey, Kayla Garcia, and Kaitlyn Hollingshead. Hollingshead led the team with two RBI as Lindsey and Garcia each added one RBI.
Texas-Tyler broke the scoreless game first in the fifth inning when Raven Rodriguez hit a home run to left field off of Parker. ETBU bounced right back in the top of the sixth inning with four runs to take the lead.
With one out, Lindsey singled up the middle to tie the game at one as Lindsey Vasquez came in. After a Liles walk to load the bases, Texas-Tyler’s Kelsie Batten walked Garcia in four pitches for the go ahead run making it 2-1. Taking advantage of the momentum, Hollingshead had 1-1 count and connected on the next pitch putting it up the middle scoring both Liles and Lindsey for the three-run lead. Texas-Tyler swapped out pitchers bringing in Alaina Kissinger who then got out of the inning without letting any more runs score.
Texas-Tyler left six runners on base in the game while ETBU had five left on.
ETBU will now play Texas Lutheran for the second time in the tournament for the right to advance to the NCAA Super Regional.
This was the 18th meeting where both teams were ranked in the top 10 as each team has won nine games each
It was the ninth meeting in a row that the two teams have played each other ranked in the top 10
This was the 32nd meeting when both teams were nationally ranked as the series is 16-16 overall
This was the fourth time this year to play UTT in the post season and ETBU is 2-2 in those games
Last time ETBU won two straight games to begin the NCAA Tournament was 2009 and 2013
This will be the third time ETBU is playing for regional championship, first in this format, as they won the region in 2010 and lost in 2013
ETBU is now 19-13 in the NCAA Tournament
Janae Shirley is now 16-7 in the NCAA Tournament
