Sharp Voted ASC Freshman of the Year; 7 Players Earn ASC Awards
RICHARDSON, Texas – Turning around a team that did not make the American Southwest Conference championship tournament in 2011 to a contender in 2012, head coach Lyndsay Mashe’s team was awarded eight awards in the post-season. ETBU earned five All-ASC players and one All-ASC Tournament player along with a freshman of the year. Kolby Sharp, Kassie Freitag, Kayla Taylor, Ashley Lindsey, Hannah Jones, Melanie Moyer, and Adeaze Elonu all earned ASC awards.
Sharp leads the award winners as the ASC Freshman of the Year and is an All-ASC first-team member receiving her first post-season award. She finished the season with 290 kills, 103 blocks, and 43 digs. She led the ASC in hitting percentage (.373) and was eighth in points (3.19 points/game). Her 103 blocks is seventh all-time in a single season at ETBU. This year, she also won the ASC “Offensive” and “Defensive” player of the week one time each. She is just the second player in program history to be the “Freshman of the Year” as Mary Morgan Swanson was the ASC East “Freshman of the Year” in 2008.
Also landing on the first team is Freitag. She led the ASC in kills (3.35 per game) and points (3.75 per game) and was 10th in hitting percentage (.238). Leading the team with 392 kills, she also posted 190 digs, 23 serving aces, and 37 blocks. She also earned ASC “Offensive Player of the Week” once this year.
Taylor was voted onto the second team for her play as a setter. She was second in the ASC in assists (9.18 per game) and sixth in serving aces (0.39 per game). For the season she finished with 868 assists and 222 digs while picking up 21 blocks. She is now fourth all-time in assists at ETBU with 1,415 after two seasons. Earlier this year, she was named the ASC “Offensive Player of the Week” in September.
For the third year in a row, Lindsey earned an All-ASC award as she was named to the third team. She was fourth in hitting percentage in the ASC at .275. With 149 kills, she was fourth on the team in kills and finished with 22 digs and 49 blocks. She was an All-ASC East first team selection in 2010 and an All-ASC third-team member last year.
Earning All-ASC honorable mention status and receiving awards for the first time at ETBU are Hannah Jones and Melanie Moyer. Jones led the team with 432 digs in her first season at ETBU. She also was second on the team in serving aces with 30. Moyer was third on the team in kills with 249 and second in digs at 349. She is now 10th all-time at ETBU in career digs with 739.
At the ASC Championship Tournament in Abilene, Elonu was named to the All-ASC Tournament team for her play. She finished with 34 kills and 23 blocks. She recorded a career high 15 kills in the final match vs. Texas-Dallas and had a career-high eight blocks against Texas Lutheran. She finished the season with 105 blocks which is sixth all-time in a single season at ETBU.
This is the second year that the ASC switched the format to an All-ASC team selection instead of having an All-ASC East and West teams.
ETBU finished the year at 19-12 and was the ASC East #2 seed in the ASC Championship Tournament and has made the tournament 11 out of the last 12 years. They competed every week for the ASC East divisional championship with the outcome coming down to the final matches of the year. Another milestone this year for the program was head coach Lyndsay Mashe becoming the all-time wins leader for the program. ETBU has won three ASC Tournament Championships in the program in 2001, 2002, and 2003.
