MARSHALL, Texas – Riding a wave of momentum after a 91-65 win over Sul Ross St. on Saturday, East Texas Baptist University continues their road trip in the American Southwest Conference this weekend. They tip-off the second half of ASC play with a trip to Mississippi College on Thursday and finish their four-game road trip with a journey to Louisiana College on Saturday.
“We played well against Howard Payne on Thursday night,” said head coach Dustin Howard. “We gave them a game. The kids really fought hard and played together. I’m really proud how they played out there. Got off to a slow start at Sul Ross, then had a really amazing second half. It was a testament to how hard our kids are playing. We really executed in the second half and we looked really good.”
Jasmine Davis is the team’s leading scorer, averaging 13 points-per-game. Amanda Rucker and Slim Stewart also average double-figures for ETBU with 11.1 and 10.3 ppg, respectively. Rucker is the team’s leading rebounder at 7.4 per game and April Leonard leads the team in assists with 46 overall, good for a 3.3 per game average. As a team, ETBU averages 71 points and 42 rebounds while shooting 39 percent from the field, 31 percent at the three-point arc and 69 percent at the free throw line. On defense, they are allowing opponents to score 76 points and grab 46 rebounds, while allowing them to shoot 40 percent from the floor and 29 percent from the free throw line.
Thursday’s opponent, Mississippi College, brings a record of 6-8 overall and 4-7 in the ASC. The two teams met earlier this season in Marshall and MC came out on top 93-72. MC is led in scoring and rebounding by Dominique Walker at 16.8 ppg and 8.9 rpg. Alexus Stirgus leads the team in assists with 49 overall (3.5 apg). On offense, Mississippi College averages 73 points and 41 rebounds per game while shooting 43 percent from the floor, 27 percent from beyond the arc and 61 percent at the free throw line. Defensively, MC is holding opponents to 72 points and 41 rebounds, while holding them to 40 percent shooting from the floor, but also allowing 32 percent from beyond the three point line.
The final game of the trip will be on Saturday in Pineville against Louisiana College. LC brings a 10-4 overall record and an 8-3 record in the ASC to the contest. The two squads met back in December with LC winning 78-63 in Marshall. Neka Jones is the leading scorer at 14.6 ppg and Danisha Allison is the leading rebounder at 8.3 rpg. Karylon Thornton has the assists lead with 56 (4 apg). At the offensive end, Louisiana College averages 80 points and 48 rebounds-per-game. They shoot 37 percent from the floor, 28 percent from behind the three point line and 56 percent at the free throw line. On defense, LC is allowing just 69 points and 46 rebounds while allowing opponents to shoot 40 percent from the floor and 25 percent from deep.
“We swept this trip last year,” said Howard of the pending trip. “We would really like to go and sweep this road trip again, but we are planning to be in both of those games. We know our opponent and we are going to go try to get a couple wins.”
ETBU returns home on the 30th for a contest against UT-Tyler.
